Focused Communications: Choosing the Best Tools

EAWA’s 2026 Annual Ham Radio Symposium

This year the Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, noon to 4pm, at the Meadow View Phase 4 Community Room at 25 Tweedie Lane (map here) in Ellsworth.

We have five presentations scheduled highlighting tools you can use to improve your operating, EmComm capabilities, and homebrewing skills.

Get The Most From HamAlert
Marion W1GRL

HamAlert is a free app that will notify you when certain call signs are on the air. This presentation will be example driven, showing how to set up precise notifications so that you are only alerted in very specific situations.

Marion is a retired psychology professor who became active in ham radio in January of 2024. She enjoys POTA activating and hunting, as well as contesting.

Remote Amateur Radio for Everyone
Gerry W1VE

Gerry will talk about “Why remote?” He’ll show you how simple remote radio can be, and do a demo in the presentation. https://remote.radio

Gerry is a retied software engineer. Active since August 1975— 50 years now! He operates remotely and assists in managing the K2LE contest station in Readsboro, Vermont. A lifelong contester with multiple world wins, Gerry operates primarily in multi-op environments.

Can You Hear Me Now? Deploying Maine’s Decentralized, Encrypted Meshtastic Backbone
David, Dakota, and John

This presentation will highlight the real-world design and deployment of MaineMesh, a community-built, encrypted Meshtastic LoRa network, spanning urban Portland rooftops to rural mountain peaks. No carriers. No central authority. Just cryptography, RF physics, and volunteers.

By day, David, Dakota, and John are engineers and, by night, they are founders and organizers of MaineMesh.

3D Printing for Ham Radio Projects
Greg KC1RID

Greg has used 3D printing to create custom antennas, antenna mounts, and other useful accessories for amateur radio setup. He’ll discuss how to incorporate 3d printing into your hobby and provide some examples of projects he has done.

Greg is a retired Electrical Engineer, SOTA / POTA activator, avid tinkerer, and the coach of the MDI High School Robotics team.

APRS: More Than Tracking
Jeff KA1DBE

Jeff will discuss how to use APRS for more than just tracking. He will cover messaging and different applications for APRS use.

Jeff works at MDI Hospital in Engineering. He has been a licensed ham for 47 years, and enjoys CW, Digital modes, and QRP portable operations.

In addition to the five presentations, there will be information and demonstrations tables. Admission is free, although a donation for the use of the Meadow View Community Room is appreciated (all donations go to the facility). Light refreshments will be served.
